Why study disaster reduction risk management?

All over the world, on a daily basis, humanity witnesses and deals with man-made related  crises or natural disasters. In the present age of social media, the ease of receiving information on a catastrophic event occurring in some part of the world, has increased drastically. Heroes are not necessarily individuals dressed in costumes and backed by a flying cape, but  are also the individuals genuinely interested in preventing and managing disasters.

According to CNN, in 2016 alone, natural disasters caused 175 billions US dollars in losses. Based on the facts that there are unrecorded disasters, a closer study could increase the financial loss  in dollars to a higher amount.  ‘Man-made’ related disasters causing wars, crimes, pollution and other unnamed calamities affects billions of human on a daily basis, thus increasing the demands for agents capable of preventing and managing disastrous events.

Technological advancement brought benefits such as longer life expectancy and comfort but on the other hand, its misuse influenced the rise in negative impact found in wars, industrialization, cyber crime and global warming.

More than ever before, the world needs a new generation of heroes who will step up to the challenge of preserving the human race against greater calamities.
